New Easter Record For The Royal Yacht Britannia

The Royal Yacht Britannia announced today its busiest April ever, with an increase of 39% (10,573 visitors) on 2016. A massive increase which beats all previous records for Easter, since the Royal Yacht opened its doors to the public in 1998.

Bob Downie, Britannia’s Chief Executive said: “Our great staff did a magnificent job in what was an incredibly busy Easter, with some days on par with a busy July, which is astonishing and augers well for the year ahead. At the heart of this success is our unrivalled commitment to deliver great value for time, through providing exceptional visitor experiences, that in turn results in Britannia being the top attraction in Scotland on TripAdvisor”.

The positive trend in tourism is reflected across Edinburgh and the Lothians, with the majority of attractions recording excellent figures for Easter, due to the growing popularity of Edinburgh as a safe destination for a high quality and value for money break. This is also reinforced by the monthly growth in Edinburgh’s hotel occupancy levels, and airport passenger numbers, further helped by the pound’s poor exchange rate.

Visitors travel from across the world to visit Her Majesty the Queen’s former floating palace to follow in the footsteps of royalty and experience the highest standards of customer service. Britannia’s five decks are fully accessible and the complimentary audio tour is available in 30 languages, as well as British Sign Language.

Britannia has been officially Scotland’s Best Attraction for 11 years running, rated by VisitScotland, and is also now proud to be one of the country’s most accessible attractions.

Sweet Success for Royal Yacht Britannia’s Stephen Espouy

The Royal Yacht Britannia is celebrating the success of Executive Pastry Chef Stephen Espouy reaching the World Chocolate Masters 2017/18 pre-selections.

The World Chocolate Masters is hailed as the ‘most challenging and inspiring chocolate competition’ in the world of gastronomy, and the most prestigious to win for chocolate chefs.

On October 9 2017, Stephen will join five of the nation’s finest chocolatiers from the UK and Ireland competing to push the boundaries in chocolate creativity in the pre-selection round in London.

The winner will go on to compete against the most celebrated chocolate artisans from around the world and represent the UK and Ireland on a global stage, in a bid to be named World Chocolate Master at the Grand Final in October 2018.

The theme is ‘Futropolis’ – based on the growing phenomenon of mega cities. Using ‘Futropolis’ as a starting point, Stephen will experiment with flavours and textures to create a sculptural showpiece (The Futropolitan) which has to be made entirely from chocolate.

Stephen said, “To be competing in such a high level competition alongside some of the most talented chefs in the world is a huge honour both personally and professionally. Having grown up working on chocolate creations with my father, who was a baker and chocolatier, I learnt a huge amount from a young age and have honed my technical skills since taking on the role of Executive Pastry Chef working in the original Royal Galleys aboard Britannia. I am very much looking forward to competing with my fellow peers and seeing all the chocolate showpieces in October.”

The Royal Yacht Britannia and Stephen Espouy

Once a home to Her Majesty The Queen and the Royal Family, Britannia is now a 5 star evening events venue where the same high standards can be found on board today as when in Royal Service.

  • Stephen joined The Royal Yacht Britannia in May 2015 from the Ritz Carlton Sharq Village & Spa, Qatar. Having previously worked in Kuwait, Ireland, Scotland, France and Australia Stephen returned to settle in Scotland and accepted the role of Executive Pastry Chef.
  • Stephen is responsible for designing and making all the desserts, petit fours and chocolate delicacies that are served on board, as well as the dessert canapés for exclusive drinks receptions. Leading his team, Stephen oversees all cakes prepared for the Royal Deck Tea Room. Britannia’s on board bakery has recently expanded to include a brand new dedicated Pastry Galley.
  • The Royal Yacht Britannia is owned by a charitable trust (SC028070) and all surplus funds are reinvested in protecting her for future generations.

Plans unveiled for new luxury floating hotel in Edinburgh

Plans for Scotland’s first luxury static floating hotel were lodged today with the City of Edinburgh Council. The former Northern Lighthouse Board (NLB) tender, MV Fingal, will be converted into a 23 bedroom hotel, berthed permanently at the Prince of Wales Dock in Edinburgh’s historic port of Leith.
The £3.5m investment by the Royal Yacht Britannia’s trading company, Royal Yacht Enterprises, will see this classically designed ship transformed to provide the ultimate in luxury, offering a wide range of bedroom suites, cabins with private balconies, duplex apartments, and a stunning Presidential Suite.
The ‘boatique’ hotel is expected to open in Easter 2018 and create at least 30 permanent new jobs in the hospitality industry, added to the 170 already employed directly at Britannia.
The hotel concept has been created by the Pedley Group and all the bedrooms will be named after Stevenson lighthouses nominated by the NLB. The interior design has been inspired by Fingal’s rich maritime history, blending the avant-garde expectations of discerning guests with the functional necessities of luxury retreats.
Developing Fingal represents natural organic growth for the award-winning team at Britannia and, as well as business synergies and operational efficiencies, the hotel will generate an income stream that is not reliant on visitors to the Royal Yacht but will nevertheless help secure its long term future.
The Royal Yacht Britannia, berthed at Ocean Terminal in Leith, attracted a record 350,000 visitors last year and is renowned for providing the very highest standards of customer experience: having been officially assessed as Scotland’s Best Attraction for the last 11 years running by national tourism agency, VisitScotland.
Britannia’s Chief Executive Bob Downie said, ‘Having excelled in the visitor attraction market for nearly 20 years, we are very much looking forward to the challenges of operating in the luxury hotel market and the benefits it will generate for Britannia over the years to come’.
One of the UK hospitality industry’s most eminent and respected figures, Peter Lederer, past UK Hotelier of the Year, and former Chairman of the Gleneagles Hotel said, “This new ‘boatique’ hotel has the potential to be the best hotel experience in Edinburgh and given the quality of the Britannia experience, I am really looking forward to seeing a new benchmark in Scotland.”

A £250,000 Valentine experience on board the Royal Yacht BRITANNIA

The Royal Yacht Britannia is one of the most exclusive evening events venues in the UK and we’re offering the ultimate Valentine experience for one lucky couple. We’ve teamed up with Scotland’s luxury jewellery house and Royal Warrant Holder, Hamilton & Inches, to offer the most luxurious Valentine experience that money can buy.

Priced at £250,000, the evening begins with a chauffeur-driven Rolls-Royce, courtesy of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Edinburgh, from The Balmoral Hotel for a private quayside arrival at Britannia.

The couple will be piped aboard via the Royal Brow, an entrance previously reserved for The Royal Family. The finest vintage Krug Champagne and delicious canapés, all made on board in the original Royal Galleys, will be served in the State Drawing Room.

There, you will meet a Master Craftsman from Hamilton & Inches for a private viewing of their Signature Suite collection, a hand-crafted three piece suite of jewellery consisting of diamond collar necklace, diamond earrings and diamond cuff bracelet, featuring over 660 diamonds. Created in celebration of Hamilton & Inches 150th anniversary, this is the only suite to exist in the world and will be yours to wear and enjoy throughout the evening, and to own for a lifetime!

Britannia’s Executive Chef Mark Alston will create an exquisite ten-course tasting menu, served by the Royal Yacht’s butlers, with paired wines personally selected from the Moët & Hennessy collection by Britannia’s Head Sommelier.

This sumptuous dinner will be served in the State Dining Room, where Her Majesty The Queen once entertained kings and queens, presidents and celebrities, whilst a classical string duo play a selection of romantic songs, throughout the evening. After dinner, enjoy a glass or two of rare Hennessy Paradis Imperial Cognac, from your very own custom engraved bottle. The evening concludes with a spectacular private fireworks display before returning to The Balmoral Hotel, where a night in the Castle View suite awaits.

The Royal Yacht Britannia acquired the iconic heritage vessel MV Windsor Castle

In a near £1 million investment, this classically designed ship is to be converted into a 25 bedroom luxury ‘boatique’ hotel. She will be berthed permanently, adjacent to Britannia in Edinburgh’s historic port of Leith.

Launched in August 1963, she was the last ship built by the Blythswood Shipbuilding Company, Glasgow, and was previously the Northern Lighthouse Board’s (NLB) tender Fingal. She was Leith registered but spent most of her NLB service working out of Oban for 30 years, followed by her last 6 years, based in Stromness, Orkney.

At 239 feet long, she is nearly two-thirds of the size of Britannia. The vessel was sold by the NLB in 2000 to Tamahine Shipping and has been maintained to the highest standards ever since, at her berth on the River Fal in Cornwall.

The ship was scheduled to arrive in Leith during the week of 25 August, 2014, and undergo an 18 month conversion, scheduled to open in Spring 2016. Developing a floating hotel represents natural organic growth for Britannia, having the requisite management skills in-house, and servicing demand from both day visitors and evening event guests for quality accommodation, adjacent to the Royal Yacht. Officially Scotland’s best visitor attraction, for each of the last nine years, and the UK’s No.1 attraction (TripAdvisor 2014), Britannia is already renowned for delivering the highest quality of customer experience; and this hotel will fit neatly within the overall brand.

Britannia’s Chief Executive Bob Downie said, ‘After many years of searching for the right ship, we are delighted that we have been able to acquire this iconic vessel and look forward to opening Scotland’s first boatique hotel. As a youngster growing up in Oban I have very fond memories of seeing the Fingal and I am delighted that the long-term future of another much loved classic vessel has been secured.’
