The Torridon Wins Independent Hotel of the Year at The Cateys

The Torridon, located in the remote Scottish Highlands, was awarded Independent Hotel of the Year at The Cateys, the glittering annual hospitality awards, on Tuesday 3 July at Grosvenor House.
The 32-bedroom loch-side turreted property, with a five AA star hotel, inn rooms and private boathouse, is owned and managed by Dan and Rohaise Rose-Bristow. They bought the former Victorian shooting lodge from Rohaise’s parents in 2004, after managing it for five years.

With 100% occupancy through three consecutive months in 2017 and an annual occupancy of 96.5%, up 19% over the past three years, The Torridon is a beacon for offering the best in Scottish hospitality. Locally-sourced ingredients from land and loch, freshly picked vegetables and herbs from the Kitchen Garden, and foraging with head chef Ross Stovold delight discerning gourmet travellers. Meanwhile, Torridon Outdoors provides tailored activities for the more energetic, including kayaking with seals, loch snorkelling and mountain biking on lesser-known routes.

Staff training at The Torridon is exemplary. Led by Rohaise (also Chair of the Apprenticeship in Hospitality, Scotland) it provides a backbone for growth and development throughout the property. Each employee undergoes a bespoke three-month training programme and five-star service training. On a personal level, the staff’s wellbeing and work/life balance are paramount. A collaborative culture is encouraged, the result being a happy and productive team and staff turnover reduced to 33%.
