About the Hotel

Blending luxury, history and atmosphere, The Witchery by the Castle sits alongside one of Scotland’s most iconic landmarks, on the characterful, ancient Royal Mile. But while this hotel has all the Gothic opulence of its rich history, it’s softened by every modern luxury.

Each suite is more than a stay, it’s a theatrical escape, filled with centuries of drama, its own rich backstory and plenty of beguiling character. The building dates to the 16th century, where it was once home to the aristocratic Semple family. Even today, every space feels steeped in history.

It’s as much about the dining experience as it is the stay, and the splendour and decadence is the backdrop to a spectacular all-day à la carte menu served in the wood panelled Dining Room or intimate Secret Garden.

Outside, the old town of Edinburgh beckons, with historic and cultural sights to tempt visitors into its narrow closes and cobbled streets. Uncover the literary history of the city, enjoy a ghost walk, visit the castle or hike to Calton Hill at sunset. The attentive, discreet Witchery team will always be on hand to shape recommendations and outings to your tastes.

Accommodation

Every one of the nine suites is a place of flamboyance, theatre and passion. Whichever you choose, the stage is set for romance, with antique furnishings, dark velvet drapes, dramatic carved four poster beds and elegant rolltop baths.

There are showstopping, one-off surprises, antique treasures and hidden trinkets to stumble on, from a secret bookcase door to a bed made from antique pulpits in the Old Rectory. No wonder The Witchery is notorious for being one of the world’s most romantic places to stay.

Dining

At dinner, the seductive mood continues. In the dramatic original dining room, exquisite Scottish cuisine is served up against a moody backdrop of wood panelling, antique furniture and candlelight.

Or, fall under the spell of The Secret Garden, a hidden gem draped in tapestries with a painted oak ceiling. Either space offers an all-day à la carte menu with dishes like hand-dived scallops, venison and langoustines. In warmer months, a topiary and urn-filled outdoor awaits for al fresco feeding.

Lovers of wine will fall for the accomplished wine list, featuring over 600 bottles and winning the hotel the Wine Spectator Best Award of Excellence. Well worth raising a glass to.
