Luxury Scotland Newsletter – February 2019

FEBRUARY NEWSLETTER
New Member / Stargazing & Spas

I am delighted to announce our newest Luxury Scotland member is The Machrie Hotel & Golf Links on Islay.

As one of Scotland’s finest links courses with stunning views out over the Atlantic, The Machrie is a 47 bedroom hotel with a modern take on Scottish design.

The hotel facilities include a Spa and Gym plus a 30-seat ‘Screening Room’ making The Machrie a perfect business and conference venue as well as the ideal choice for golfing groups and families.

Located on the Isle of Islay, on Scotland’s west coast, The Machrie can date its origins back to 1891 when Willie Campbell created the original classic links course. Today, with innovative design by D J Russell, the Machrie combines the thrill of a traditional, historic links course with the best of modern links design.

Golf at The Machrie offers an enjoyable challenge for golfers of all ages and abilities. As well as the stunning 18-hole Links, visitors can enjoy the Wee course offering six par-3 holes played from a multitude of tees, a covered driving range and short game area – and the glorious Hebrides putting course.

Launched in 2018, The Machrie Hotel & Golf Links has already collected many accolades and awards including 3 Regional Awards at the Scottish Hotel Awards, Highland and Islands Regional Event.

‘18’, The Machrie’s Restaurant, specialises in offering the finest of Scottish produce most of which is locally sourced. The ’18’ restaurant overlooks the 18th green with spectacular panoramic views over the course towards Laggan Bay. The Machrie Bar showcases an impressive collection of whiskies, most of which are from Islay’s eight distilleries.

The Machrie is easily accessible by road and car ferry or plane. Islay Airport is just 5 minutes by car and the Ferry Terminal at Port Ellen is just 10 minutes away. I do encourage you to put The Machrie on your ‘must visit’ list for 2019.

It may come as a surprise to many that Scotland has some of Europe’s best places for Stargazing. The top rated and darkest stargazing areas are in and around Galloway and Southern Ayrshire, Galloway Forest Dark Sky Park and certain areas along the west coast in Argyll. These are perfect areas for stargazing being so dark with very little light pollution.

As luck would have it, we have three Luxury Scotland hotels well known for stargazing. There is Torridon in the Highlands on the west coast, Glenapp Castle in Ayrshire and Knockinaam Lodge further south in Dumfries & Galloway. Crinan and Inverlochy Castle are also well placed for clear night skies and spectacular stargazing.

Winter, early Spring and late Autumn are the best times to enjoy stargazing and discover Scotland’s celestial treasure. During these times the nights are longer and it gets darker earlier and so stargazing can start all the sooner. While it’s possible to enjoy stargazing with nothing more than a good pair of binoculars, there are a number of Dark Sky Rangers throughout Scotland who offer guided exploration of the heavens.

The Torridon and Glenapp Castle both offer special packages including stargazing. Knockinaam has close links with an expert Dark Sky Ranger and can arrange a specialist event for families and groups. When you stay at Kinloch Lodge on the Isle of Skye, you can visit Kinloch Forest which is a Designated Dark Sky Discovery Site. All activities are obviously weather dependent.

From celestial bodies we come down to earth and turn to mind, body and spirit with some innovative promotions from the Coach House Spa at Kinross House and a special 4 day workshop at Borthwick Castle.

Luxury Scotland offers a huge range of spas and health centres ranging from world class urban spas, golf and spa resorts as well as small specialist spas offering unique Scottish treatments using local organic products.

As we start the new year it is an ideal time to consider recharging and renewing mind and body – in readiness for the year ahead.

I hope you find our latest news of interest
