Four Wonderful Road Trips around Scotland

Four Wonderful Road Trips around Scotland

Driving around Scotland is a wonderful experience and one of the best ways to enjoy and discover more about this wonderful country.

The North Coast 500 [NC500] is a stunning tour around the north of Scotland and is one of the greatest road trips in the world. Starting and ending in Inverness the trip covers 500 miles of spectacular countryside, wide open roads, friendly people and delicious fresh, local food. To fully enjoy the North Coast 500 will take you the best part of a week.

However, if you are looking for something shorter, I have four tours of my favourite road trips to share with you. They will introduce you to four special regions of Scotland with magnificent scenery and most are easily driven in a day.

Scotland is a paradise for those who enjoy travelling by car. I am always in awe of new discoveries and the dramatic landscapes as I travel around Scotland. I hope these tours will whet your appetite for discovering our wonderful country.

Jeremy Hawkings, Chief Executive,
Luxury Scotland.

1. The East Neuk of Fife Tour

This a short 25 miles itinerary along Fife’s Coastal Route.

Within a few hours you can enjoy spectacular coastal scenery, visit several historic fishing villages, find out how Scotch whisky is distilled and discover how some of Scotland most famous cheeses are made.

You might even take a boat trip to the Isle of May where you will see puffins, seals and other wildlife.

2. The East Lothian and the Borders Tour

About 65 miles long, depending on how many of the wonderful stately homes you decide to visit.

We begin at the seaside with a chance to discover one of the world’s most famous seabird colonies and to visit a unique distillery famous for making ‘The Edinburgh Malt’.

Then we drive off to discover some of Scotland’s castles and great mansion houses including the home of Sir Walter Scott, the famous Scottish historical novelist, playwright and poet.

3. The Road to the Isles Tour

One of my favourite journeys in Scotland.

It is 50 miles long, runs from Fort William to Mallaig and has some of the most spectacular scenery in Scotland. During this tour you will cross The Caledonian Canal, see the famous Neptune’s Staircase and walk on the The Sands of Morar.

You can enjoy marvellous views of Ben Nevis and you might catch a glimpse of The Jacobite Steam Train as it crosses the Glenfinnan Viaduct featured in the Harry Potter Films.

4. The Rest and be Thankful – The Bridge over the Atlantic Tour

Like its title, this route is longer than the other. Approximately 200 miles it is worth taking 3 days to enjoy.

The trip starts with a drive up and over The Rest and be Thankful, one of the most famous roads in Scotland. The route travels through the towns of Inverary and Mynard on Loch Fyne where you can visit Inverary Castle and explore the archaeological sites of standing stones.

You can also enjoy some of the best of Scottish seafood at the end of the Crinan Canal. You will be able to drive over the Clachan Bridge which is known as ‘The Bridge over the Atlantic’ and experience the majesty of Glen Coe.

Welcome to Luxury Scotland’s June Newsletter

Travel around Scotland and you’re never far from a loch, river or a coastal view. It is no wonder that Scotland is rated as one of the world’s top fishing destinations.

Scottish waters provide a huge variety of fishing opportunities, from salmon rivers, still water lochs with brown and rainbow trout, plentiful coarse fishing for pike, perch, roach, bream, rudd, carp and tench and a bountiful coastline where skate, cod, pollock, flounder, mackerel and bass can be found.

With the trout season running from mid-March to the end of September and the salmon season lasting from February to October there is ample opportunity for a fishing vacation or short break in Scotland.

Our recent article entitled ‘Scotland hooks anglers with bountiful fishing opportunities‘ contains tips and advice on fishing in Scotland including a selection of hotels specialising in fishing breaks and vacations. Anglers can choose from a castle location, a riverside lodge, a Scottish country house or a golf resort with its own fishing academy.

So, if you are angling for a great deal then cast your eye over our latest News & Offers section. If fishing is not on your menu there are opportunities for golf, spa and foraging breaks as well as news about our member hotels.

At the Torridon, Chef David Barnett uses as many local, and in many instances, home-grown products as possible. The kitchen garden provides him with the majority of the salad that he uses, as well as fruit for the crumble which always goes down a treat with anyone dining at the Inn. The Torridon has its very own herd of highland coos and a sty full of Tamworth pigs which all feature on the menu.

The Torridon

Why don’t you pop in for lunch or an evening meal and try out some of the best the West has to offer? If you can’t do that but you are likely to be in the vicinity of Inverness on 19 May, then it’s worth knowing about a charity event being held that evening. Birchwood Highland dedicates its resources to people with mental health issues, supporting their recovery and helping them gain self-confidence.

The Torridon

The 19 May gala dinner will be held in the atrium of the new Inverness College and The Torridon’s own super chef David Barnett is in charge of the first course. The mains will come courtesy of Jamie Scott, winner of Masterchef: The Professionals, with desserts in the capable hands of Mark Dickson from Bunchrew House Hotel. Vegetarians will be looked after by Phil Stewart from cafe Nourish.

Welcome to Luxury Scotland’s February 2016 Newsletter

Welcome to this Luxury Scotland Newsletter for February 2016

I am delighted to announce that Crossbasket Castle has joined Luxury Scotland and becomes the latest member of the Luxury Scotland group of hotels. Situated at High Blantyre, approximately 30 minutes’ drive from Glasgow, Crossbasket Castle is a luxury Scottish venue available for exclusive use, with nine palatial bedrooms and banquet hall to seat 250 people. It is quite simply magnificent.

Guests at Crossbasket Castle will enjoy a truly historic experience. The origins of Crossbasket go back over 600 years. The oldest part of the Castle is the 15th Century Tower, built on a hill high above the river. Now known as the Honeymoon Tower, it is a fabulous, romantic 4-storey suite served by a sweeping spiral stone staircase.

The Castle is approached along a glorious driveway passing through exclusive garden grounds eventually revealing the breath-taking front entrance of this Scottish luxury castle. The castle grounds include a large stretch of woodland, extensive nature walks and a beautiful stretch of river featuring majestic waterfalls. The grounds hold a promise of privacy and tranquillity.

For the time being it is available on an exclusive use basis, but from 1st May, 2016, Crossbasket will open as a hotel managed by Inverlochy Castle Management International. The cuisine and menus will be overseen by Chef Albert Roux OBE and Michel Roux Jnr.

It is tradition each year on St Valentine’s Day for people in many countries around the world to exchange gifts, cards and flowers with their special ‘valentine’. The tradition derives from Saint Valentine was a 3rd century Roman Saint associated with courtly love.

St Valentine is buried in Rome, but you do not have to go that far to pay your respects to him on 14th February. Simply pop along to your local florist, chocolatier or perhaps the Jaguar showroom and purchase a memento for your loved one.

Alternatively, you can study our ‘Romance is in the Air‘ article for innovative and romantic ideas and let Luxury Scotland inspire you to celebrate the occasion in style.

Whatever you do, enjoy February and, in addition to a romantic break at a Luxury Scotland hotel, the Jaguar option is probably the best option.

Welcome to the Luxury Scotland Newsletter for September 2015

The Luxury Scotland Newsletter for September 2015

I have said many times in our newsletters that Scotland is one of the few places in the world where it is still fun to drive and our Scottish Classic Cars article in this month’s newsletter is testimony to that.

cararticleThere is nothing I enjoy more than spreading out a map of the west coast on the bonnet of my car and planning the next journey.

Written by our Writer in Residence, Linda Jackson describes one of her recent journeys up to Torridon in her new toy.

This month we are delighted to announce that we have yet another new member, bringing the number of Connoisseurs Scotland properties up to 30.

Lochgreen-Hotel-01Our latest member is Lochgreen House Hotel, set on 30 acres near Troon on Scotland’s west coast. We welcome Bill Costley and his team to our organization.

Scotland is in buzzing with activity at this time of the year. In Edinburgh the International Arts Festival, the largest one of its kind in the world, is in full swing, supported by The Fringe, The Book Festival and The Military Tattoo. Elsewhere in the countryside there are nature based activities in Dumfries and Galloway, including moon watching, as well as a number of Highland Games and other smaller festivals to enjoy.

onedevOur luxury cycling tours which we run in conjunction with The Carter Company are proving very popular and the countryside is looking wonderful helped by an amazing display this year of wild flowers.

In Glasgow, following a £200,000 investment, Hotel du Vin Glasgow at One Devonshire Gardens has completed an extensive refurbishment of its ground floor public areas, spanning the bar, bistro and whisky snug as well as several function suites.

A firm favourite in Glasgow for both dining and overnight stays, One Devonshire Gardens is looking very smart indeed.

With Autumn approaching and plans being made for Christmas, I must mention Royal Yacht Britannia for those of you looking for an exceptional venue for your festive celebrations.   Britannia is magical during the festive season and a spectacular setting for private dinners and evening receptions. A red carpet awaits as guests are piped aboard the Royal Brow, the entrance previously reserved for the Royal Family. An evening on Britannia with cocktails for as many as 380 people or dinner for up to 96 people is an occasion that will never be forgotten. For more details go to:
