Sweet Success for Royal Yacht Britannia’s Stephen Espouy

The Royal Yacht Britannia is celebrating the success of Executive Pastry Chef Stephen Espouy reaching the World Chocolate Masters 2017/18 pre-selections.

The World Chocolate Masters is hailed as the ‘most challenging and inspiring chocolate competition’ in the world of gastronomy, and the most prestigious to win for chocolate chefs.

On October 9 2017, Stephen will join five of the nation’s finest chocolatiers from the UK and Ireland competing to push the boundaries in chocolate creativity in the pre-selection round in London.

The winner will go on to compete against the most celebrated chocolate artisans from around the world and represent the UK and Ireland on a global stage, in a bid to be named World Chocolate Master at the Grand Final in October 2018.

The theme is ‘Futropolis’ – based on the growing phenomenon of mega cities. Using ‘Futropolis’ as a starting point, Stephen will experiment with flavours and textures to create a sculptural showpiece (The Futropolitan) which has to be made entirely from chocolate.

Stephen said, “To be competing in such a high level competition alongside some of the most talented chefs in the world is a huge honour both personally and professionally. Having grown up working on chocolate creations with my father, who was a baker and chocolatier, I learnt a huge amount from a young age and have honed my technical skills since taking on the role of Executive Pastry Chef working in the original Royal Galleys aboard Britannia. I am very much looking forward to competing with my fellow peers and seeing all the chocolate showpieces in October.”

The Royal Yacht Britannia and Stephen Espouy

Once a home to Her Majesty The Queen and the Royal Family, Britannia is now a 5 star evening events venue where the same high standards can be found on board today as when in Royal Service.

  • Stephen joined The Royal Yacht Britannia in May 2015 from the Ritz Carlton Sharq Village & Spa, Qatar. Having previously worked in Kuwait, Ireland, Scotland, France and Australia Stephen returned to settle in Scotland and accepted the role of Executive Pastry Chef.
  • Stephen is responsible for designing and making all the desserts, petit fours and chocolate delicacies that are served on board, as well as the dessert canapés for exclusive drinks receptions. Leading his team, Stephen oversees all cakes prepared for the Royal Deck Tea Room. Britannia’s on board bakery has recently expanded to include a brand new dedicated Pastry Galley.

The world’s greatest women’s golf team event is coming to Gleneagles in 2019

The world’s greatest women’s golf team event is set to take place between the 13th and 15th September 2019 at the world-famous PGA Centenary Course at Gleneagles.

Scotland won the right to host The Solheim Cup in 2019 after an extensive and very competitive bidding process, coming out on top of a list of ten countries who submitted expressions of interest in hosting the event.

Significant planning and preparation for one of the world’s foremost sporting events has been under way for some time and now the dates of the event have been confirmed after careful deliberation between key partners including VisitScotland, Gleneagles, the Ladies European Tour (LET), the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) and IMG.

Paul Bush, Director of Events, VisitScotland, said: “Together with the LET, LPGA and other partners we have put a lot of thought and research into making sure this is the optimum week for all involved to ensure The 2019 Solheim Cup is an unreserved success. From all the advance sports calendars we have seen and the information gathered, this date will allow The 2019 Solheim Cup to be the highest profile golf event taking place in Europe and the US. It will also be the highest profile event taking place from a global sports perspective.”

Mark Lichtenhein, Chairman of the Ladies European Tour (LET), added: “The Solheim Cup has a long, rich, heritage like no other event in women’s golf and we are thrilled to announce the dates for our next home match at Gleneagles in Scotland. Since we launched the competition in 1990 with the Solheim family and the LPGA, the event has grown significantly in prominence and profile and today is a strong, world recognised brand. As a tour, we recognise that golf is the only Olympic sport that Europe plays together as a team, and take a huge amount of pride in bringing Europe’s leading female golfers to compete in The Solheim Cup. We are therefore fully committed to working with our partners to deliver an outstanding event for all concerned.”

Ticketing plans are now being developed with plans in place to have tickets on sale during The 2017 Solheim Cup in West Des Moines as part of official travel packages. General registration for event information is available via

The week will begin with the PING Junior Solheim Cup taking place 8th – 10th September at Gleneagles with the participants made to feel an important part of the main event. This unique U18 event will be showcased as never before as Scotland seeks to ensure that this is the most family orientated Solheim Cup ever staged. VisitScotland, on behalf of the Scottish Government, has stated the ambition to ensure the 2019 edition of the Solheim Cup in Perthshire will serve to both grow golf and leave a lasting legacy of increased participation in women’s sport.

Themes of equality, innovation and experience will be thread through all the events communications as The 2019 Solheim Cup aims to engage both the traditional golf audience and the wider sport fan, raising the profile of women’s golf both in Scotland and internationally. The Scottish Government and VisitScotland have been long-time supporters of the women’s game having partnered with the Ricoh Women’s British Open for many years and more recently, significantly enhancing the Aberdeen Asset Ladies Scottish Open as it becomes a co-sanctioned LET and LPGA event for the first time this year.

The 2019 Solheim Cup will not only showcase the stunning assets of Scotland, the Home of Golf, but also build on the legacy of the successful 2014 Ryder Cup at Gleneagles. It will underline that Scotland is the perfect stage for major golf events as it seeks to help inspire a new generation of children to take up the game invented in their home country.

Star Gazing Weekend at Airds – 17th November

Star Gazing Weekend at Airds Hotel, Nr Oban, Argyll on the West Coast of Scotland

The sky at night at Airds

The sky at night at Airds

New for 2017! The Airds is delighted to offer a unique star gazing weekend. Our location in the peaceful hamlet of Port Appin offers spectacular scenery throughout the year. This however, is not restricted to the hours of daylight. The village and surrounding areas suffer from very little light pollution, making this part of Argyll a great place to view the sky at night.

Our weekend starts on Friday evening when, with a glass of champagne in everyone’s hand, our host, Mike Alexander of the Galloway Astronomy Centre will introduce himself and the subject of astronomy before you enjoy a 5 course dinner in our 3 rosette restaurant. Following dinner Mike will continue his talk in the lounge and weather permitting, will lead a brief walk outside to illustrate some of his points and to whet your appetite for the following evening. On Saturday morning after breakfast you can join Mike for a further talk and slide show.

Take the remainder of Saturday at your leisure and explore the beautiful West Highlands before returning to the hotel for a talk on all things ‘Astronomy’ from Mike and a brief questions and answers session before dinner. After dinner will be a tour out to experience the skies first hand at a nearby dark location with Mike. During the tour of the night sky you will discover how ancient civilizations named the constellations and stars. Using a telescope we will venture into the depths of our galaxy and beyond. Typically we will be observing Star forming regions, Star Clusters and Galaxies and within our own Solar System, Jupiter – king of planets and Comet 41P Tuttle-Giacobini-Kresak not seen for 10 years. This is sure to be a unique and rewarding experience for all.

Schedule for the weekend

Fri 17th November 6.30pm Introduction to the night sky in the lounge
7.15pm Dinner in the restaurant
9.15pm Walk in Port Appin to observe the skies – approx. 40 mins

Mike Alexander – our host for the weekend
In early 2003 my wife, Helen, and I purchased a property in an area with minimal light pollution and the Galloway Astronomy Centre opened for business in 2004.

Now in its 12th year, the business has developed year on year as new ideas have been included to meet the interests of our guests. So in addition to our tours of the night sky using our 400mm reflecting telescope, which has been the mainstay of the business, we run 3 beginner astronomy courses and will be adding a fourth on Astrophotography shortly. In addition through the year I run observing nights or give astronomy talks for a variety of groups across Southern Scotland.

For many years we have sold telescopes produced by two of the leading manufacturers in the world and regularly give advice on choosing the right telescope to both beginners and the more advance amateur astronomer. We remain the only telescope supplier outside the Home Counties where you can “try before you buy” an instrument.

The awarding of the Galloway Forest as the UK’s first Dark Sky Park in 2009 certainly put the region on the astronomical map and as the only observatory open to the public in the whole of Dumfries & Galloway it has been very beneficial to us. Now we regularly welcome visitors not only from across the UK, but around the world, who are wanting to experience the beauty of a Galloway night sky. In 2015 I was asked by the the Forestry Commission to train five Dark Sky Rangers in astronomy, so that they could set up their own astronomical events in the Galloway Forest.

I have been interviewed about astronomy on BBC radio several times and I have been interviewed by China Central TV and most recently by BBC Scotland which filmed myself and our guests watching the Total Lunar Eclipse for the series “How Scotland Works”.

Terms and Conditions
Due to the nature of this event and the reliance on clear skies the schedule will need to be flexible in terms of which day the excursion takes place. In the event of complete cloud cover on both evenings the excursion will be replaced by a further talk by our host.

Please note the event requires a minimum number of 8 guests. Should this not be achieved the event will be cancelled and your deposit refunded 14 days prior to arrival. We strongly advise guests to bring good binoculars with them as well as warm weather clothing.
