Over
the last decade Colin has emerged as the undisputed leading European golfer. Known
affectionately to millions around the world as "Monty", is one of the
UK's most admired sportsmen and has held centre stage in numerous tournament victories
and in four titanic Ryder Cup struggles of the 1990s. |
After
his first (11 shot) victory on Tour at the Portuguese Open, Colin climbed up the
European Money List progressively until in 1993 he became Europe's No. 1, a position
he retained for an unprecedented run of seven years. Colin Montgomerie has now
earned more prize money than any British golfer in history. This
is Colin's list of favourite places and activities in Scotland.
A favourite outdoor location
I think one of the most beautiful locations is Skibo Castle and its grounds -
Eimear and I recently had the pleasure of staying here and the setting is stunning.
A
favourite viewpoint or landscape
Definitely Nairn - this defines Scotland for me and this was where I met my wife-to-be
at an amateur golf tournament - our home is called 'Nairn' so I think you can
appreciate its significance.
A
favourite journey
My wife and I recently made the trip to the Isle of Skye and we had forgotten
just how beautiful the Western Isles are - magical!
A
favourite historical place
I suppose this is going to be a lot of people's choice - but the sight of Edinburgh
Castle never fails to stir a Scotsman's heart!
A
favourite country walk
Well - probably any stroll around a true links golf course!
A
favourite city walk
Princes Street in Edinburgh is great. With the magnificent castle in full view
walking along one of Europe's most famous shopping streets or strolling through
the delightful Princes Street Gardens has to be a must for any visitor to Scotland.
A
favourite hotel
Turnberry Hotel without a doubt - everything about it makes for a completely perfect
stay - the fabulous views, gorgeous food, sumptuous accommodation - and one of
the best links courses in the world!
A
favourite way to spend a day in Scotland:
There are many sporting attractions - not least of which is the Open Championship
which comes to Scotland every two or three years and this has to be a great way
to spend a day!
A
fond memory of Scotland
I have a lovely memory of my first professional win on home soil in 1999 - the
pipers played me in to collect my trophy - a really moving moment and one I will
always treasure.
